Did you just give birth? Congratulations! We know that this is an incredibly special time, but it can also come with its challenges—especially when it comes to feeding your newborn. That’s why we’re here to support you every step of the way. Since many of our advocates work at the Health Department we have come together to offer postpartum latch appointments designed to provide the care, guidance, and resources you need during this crucial period.
Scheduling a postpartum/latch appointment comes with numerous benefits, and we’re excited to share what you can expect during your visit:
Weighing Baby and Assessing Food Intake:
One of the first things we’ll do during your appointment is weigh your baby to ensure they’re growing and gaining weight appropriately. We’ll also assess their food intake, whether you’re breastfeeding, bottle-feeding, or a combination of both. This step is crucial for monitoring your baby’s health and ensuring they’re getting the nutrition they need to thrive.
Latch Appointment (If Breastfeeding):
If you’re breastfeeding, our latch appointment is here to help! A proper latch is essential for successful breastfeeding, as it helps ensure your baby is getting enough milk while minimizing discomfort for you. We’ll work with you to assess your baby’s latch and provide personalized tips and techniques to make breastfeeding as comfortable and effective as possible.
Providing Resources and Upcoming Events:
We believe that support doesn’t stop at the appointment. During your visit, we’ll share valuable resources to help you navigate the postpartum period, including information about upcoming events, local support groups, and educational opportunities. Whether you need advice on breastfeeding, mental health, or connecting with other new parents, we’ve got you covered.
Tips to Help the Family:
Welcoming a new baby is a family affair, and we’re here to offer tips that can help everyone adjust. From understanding your baby’s cues to managing sleep and finding time for self-care, we’ll provide practical advice to support your entire family during this transition.
Postpartum Checks and More:
Your health is just as important as your baby’s. During the appointment, we’ll conduct postpartum checks to ensure you’re healing well and feeling your best. This includes discussing any physical or emotional changes you may be experiencing, as well as addressing concerns like postpartum depression or anxiety. We’re here to provide a safe space where you can share your experiences and receive the care you need.
Why Early Intervention Matters:
Scheduling a postpartum/latch appointment soon after giving birth allows us to provide early intervention, which can make a world of difference for both you and your baby. Early support can help:
Prevent breastfeeding challenges: Addressing latch issues early can prevent common breastfeeding problems like sore nipples, engorgement, and low milk supply.
Monitor baby’s health: Regular weight checks and assessments ensure your baby is on track with their growth and development.
Support maternal mental health: Early postpartum checks allow us to identify and address any emotional or physical concerns, helping you feel supported and confident in your new role.
Empower families: Providing resources and tips early on helps families adjust to their new dynamic, fostering a positive environment for everyone.
