When it comes to pumping, comfort and efficiency are key but did you know that having the right flange size is crucial for both? If you’re using the wrong size, you could be facing unnecessary pain, discomfort, and even reduced milk output.
Here’s a surprising fact: most breast pumps come with a 24 mm flange by default. But studies show that 50-80% of women actually need a smaller size!
If your flange isn’t the right fit, you might experience issues like:
❌ Pain or discomfort while pumping
❌ Nipple damage or irritation
❌ Reduced milk output
Don’t worry, you’re not alone and there’s an easy way to fix it!
How to Check Your Flange Fit
Here’s a quick guide to help you determine the right flange size for you:
Measure your nipple diameter (not the areola) in millimeters while it’s at rest.
Add 1-2 mm to that measurement to find your ideal flange size.
For example, if your nipple diameter measures 19 mm, your ideal flange size would likely be 21 mm or even 19 mm, depending on the exact fit.
Why Flange Size Matters
Many moms find that they need a 19 mm or 21 mm flange, even though those sizes aren’t always included in pump kits. But don’t worry just because a 24 mm flange is the most common, doesn’t mean it’s the right one for you!
If you’re experiencing pain, discomfort, or notice low milk output, it’s definitely worth checking your flange size. I am more than happy to help with fitting and provide personalized guidance to ensure you’re using the best size for your comfort and milk supply.
Remember, pumping should be a positive and productive experience. Finding the right flange size can make a world of difference in your pumping journey!
