Takeaways from My First Experiences With Therapy

Leaving my therapy session today, I felt compelled to address the negative stigma surrounding mental health. It’s time to debunk the misconceptions and shed light on the profound benefits of seeking help.

🔅 Mental health does not equate to being "crazy" or flawed. It does not make you a bad mother or a bad person. A counselor is not there to judge you but to support and guide you through your journey of healing. Embracing therapy has been one of the most challenging yet rewarding experiences of my life.

🔅 Therapy is for everyone. Whether you've experienced a rough past marked by emotional or physical abuse, or you've endured traumatic events like sexual assault or life-threatening situations—therapy is for you. Even if you feel like there's nothing "wrong" but simply want to enhance your coping skills or improve communication with your partner, therapy can provide invaluable support and guidance.

🔅 Here are just a few things I've learned in therapy:

- Healthier ways to cope with stress, anxiety, and trauma.

- Understanding that I can only control how I react to situations and that I'm not accountable for others' actions.

- Realizing that I have nothing to be ashamed of and that I didn't "ask" to be assaulted as a child—it is not my fault.

- Learning that perfection is not attainable and discovering how to communicate my feelings more effectively.

If you've tried counseling before and it didn't work, I urge you to keep trying. Every therapist is unique, and finding the right fit can make all the difference in your journey toward healing. Don't give up on yourself—keep fighting until you find the counselor who resonates with you.
